Daily writing prompt

What would you change about modern society?

There are a lot of good things in this world and quite a bit wrong. While there are problems everywhere, I live in America and must say the thing that needs to change the most is the thirst for profit. Even though we drive Uber and care for my kids now, I spent almost a decade in banking. Seeing how wages came in and why made my heart sad sometimes.

People absolutely deserve to be paid well for running large companies that provide several jobs, however they should be scaled at what their lowest paid employee makes. CEO’s are not doing 300x more work than their lowest employee. A rising tide raises all boats should be the thought process. If your company is successful all of the profit shouldn’t go in to the hands of a few. Shareholders are important but shouldn’t reap the kings share of profits for a company. The pandemic showed record profits across several markets but wealth only seemed to funnel to the already wealthy and fortunate. Hazard pay not provided for workers during the height of covid, but massive bonuses for executives is simply not right.

Companies will say to increase the wages of employees they would have increase the cost of products. The only reason they would have to do that is to maintain profits. Infinite growth is not sustainable. Companies will price their products out of reach of consumers if they try to chase the infinite growth in profit model. They will have to take a profit cut to keep workers working on a suitable wage, while having a product that is affordable.

Self sacrifice is not the name of the game in capitalism. Sadly I see a crash occurring before a company self imposed a limit in itself. If one dies I think it will be able to set a market trend and survive where others will fail. Eventually we need to get back to more even ground and that starts with ending the greed of chasing endless profit.

Everyone deserves a happy and comfortable life.
